Glass
A glass gallery and exhibition space
The challenge of this project was to create a space that would house visiting glass artists, an area for glass blowing shows, and an area for displaying art. As a studio project, we had the added criteria of parking requirements, building code compliant fire egress, and adequate understanding of structural support requirements.
This project was inspired by Louis Kahn's concept of served space and service space. The service space was placed in the area that didn't directly terminate an axis approaching the building.
The design incorporated a skylight that allowed for dissipated natural light to brighten the exhibition space rather than the glass pieces being displayed. Natural light in an exhibition of glass art can alter the artist's desired effect.
