Adding a transit oriented development to Atlanta...
Atlanta is characterized by it's highways. It is one of the major cities influenced by suburban sprawl and as a result it has become notorious for it's rush hour traffic. Atlanta's "solution" to the highways has been the widening of roads and a 24/7 H.O.V. lane that is loosely enforced.
This has only allowed more people onto the roads and the result has been more traffic.
Atlanta is now showing promise for the future. It's MARTA system is not used by most due to it's unreliable schedule as well as the unpleasant pedestrian experience to and from most of the stations. In the 2016 HINES competition, we were given the opportunity to design a development that would engage students, workers, and tourists with the transit system of Atlanta.
We designed a pedestrian corridor through an existing block offering students a safe and enjoyable path to and from Georgia Tech campus via a tunnel going under the 75/85 highway. As a mixed-use development it offers residential, commercial, and public space. With the transit center as the nexus of the community.
