Stranded on a Traffic Island

There's no crosswalk...

There was no traffic signal or stop sign! This was the realization that I had with my classmates in the University of Miami's Urban Design program. We were stranded on a traffic island and had just realized what our project's main objective must be.

This project aimed to increase pedestrian space and maintain circulation on a traffic island surrounded, in total, by 8 lanes of 35+ mph traffic.

I designed an arcaded square that pinched the southbound traffic into two lanes. Northbound traffic is diverted around the block created by the square. The square is shaded by an arcade that provides shelter from the occasional Miami rain.

The design also adds stop signs and speed humps that function as crosswalks.
