Place d'Armes, Toulon, France
Defining the entrance to Toulon
The majority of people driving into the port city of Toulon, France experience an open "Place" on the left and a rhythmic building on the right.
The "Place d'Armes" is where the French military would traditionally march in displays of power. This place has outlived its function and after a summer travelling the south of France we proposed a new design.
Our design was featured in The Classicist, a publication of the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art. My sketch was selected as one of the images describing our project.
Our project was a mixed use development with hotel, apartments, and retail. All designed to coordinate with the structural system of the existing garage located under the site.
Inspired by the architectural vernacular in Toulon, we designed mid-rise buildings of 4-5 stories and used architectural elements to terminate the vistas approaching our site.
